Chamomile is the most famous, one of the most used and best scientifically researched herbs in the world . The name chamomilla originates from antiquity and translates as "earth apple". It is believed that the name is associated with the pleasant apple aroma of chamomile. Ancient Egyptian healers used it as a pain reliever and for sunburns. They called it "flower of the Sun God". The small delicate flower does look like the sun, but its many medicinal properties have made it one of the most used medicinal plants from ancient times to the present day. Its anti-inflammatory, sedative, analgesic, antispasmodic, carminative and bactericidal effects are strongly expressed. It is used internally and externally as almost universal remedy for numerous diseases of the digestive, excretory, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, disorders of mental balance, treatment of skin problems and wounds, and even for beauty procedures such as hair lightening.
Chamomile is a wild annual herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. It thrives in all climates and is today the most common cultivated medicinal plant. It is grown all over the world, but it is believed that the highest quality is the herb grown in Egypt and Slovakia. The flower (flos chamomillae), dried or fresh, is the main part of the plant used. The chemical composition shows the content of: essential oil (from 0.3 to 1.2%) with a large amount of paraffin and sesquiterpines, organic acids, mucilage substances, coumarins, flavonoids, fatty acids, bitter substances, vitamin C and provitamin A, etc.
The products used are:
- chamomile oil - obtained by steam distillation of the entire aerial part of the flowering plant. It contains many components, among which the main one is hamazulene. High-quality chamomile oil has a characteristic deep blue color;
- chamomile extract - only the flowers of the herb are used, which are poured with lukewarm water and left in a dark and cool place, the liquid is filtered and the resulting extract has all the useful properties of the fresh plant;
- alcohol extract - the herb is poured with pure alcohol or brandy, vodka, wine at home;
- infusion or chamomile tea is the most common way of use at home. Dried or fresh chamomile flower is used.
Scientific studies prove that taken internally , in the form of an infusion (tea), capsules with oil or chamomile extract, this universal herb has a positive effect on a number of problems with the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys such as spasms, pains, vomiting, calms the smooth muscles and mucous membranes. It has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, reducing the symptoms of stress and the feeling of tension, calming motor overactivity and significantly improving the condition of fear neuroses and insomnia. Drinking chamomile tea is recommended for women with painful menstrual cycles. It is also a commonly used herb for colic in babies, an ideal remedy for sore throats in small children.
A very good effect is observed when used externally of preparations with chamomile (ointment and cream) in cases of toxic inflammation of the skin, as well as in sunburns of the 1st and 2nd degree. Clinical studies have shown that preparations with chamomile oil or extract work on skin inflammation and redness, atopic eczema and skin peeling better or equally with hydrocortisone preparations, but without causing side effects. Chamomile has a proven antibacterial and antifungal effect, which is why it is often used in gynecology and dermatology for baths, compresses and washes. Most often in folk medicine, it is recommended for gargling or inhalations for inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, for flu conditions and colds, for toothache and mouth ulcers. Compresses or even just rinsing with chamomile infusion or extract relieve tired and strained eyes, after long standing in front of the computer screen or TV. Baths with chamomile have a beneficial effect on increased sweating of the feet and hands.

At home for indoor and outdoor use, you can do:
- tea or more precisely chamomile infusion by pouring 1-2 tablespoons of dried flowers with 250 ml of hot water. The decoction is ready after 10 minutes. According to some sources, the effect is stronger when the herb is fresh.
- you can make an extract or aqueous extract of chamomile by pouring 5 tablespoons of chamomile with 500 ml of lukewarm water and letting the mixture stand for 8 hours in a cool and dark place.
Strain and use for drinking, smearing or bathing in the next 1 to 2 days.
